Asymmetric temporal bone pneumatization: an MR imaging pitfall.

چکیده
A healthy 44-year-old woman was evaluated neurologically because she had had dizziness without vertigo and right facial pain for several months. The pain was not typical for trigeminal neuralgia, and she had had no loss of hearing. Physical examination showed no abnormalities. Cranial MR imaging was ordered for evaluation of the cerebellopontine angle. Axial MR images showed apparently normal eighth cranial nerves bilaterally (Fig . 1). However, an asymmetric area of increased signal was noted anterior to the origin of the right eighth cranial nerve. Coronal and parasagittal sections showed high signal intensity in the right cerebellopontine angle , but without any mass effect. The MR signal from this area was that of fat, and a possible lipoma or other fatty tumor was considered. Axial CT scanning showed asymmetric pneumatization of the temporal bones, particularly the petrous apex. The left was pneumatized completely, and the right contained marrow. This marrow clearly was the explanation for the high MR signal intenSity in the right cerebellopontine angle.

Classification and volumetric analysis of temporal bone pneumatization using cone beam computed tomography.
OBJECTIVE This study performed volumetric analysis and classified different repeated patterns of temporal bone pneumatization in adults using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. STUDY DESIGN A total of 155 temporal bones were retrospectively evaluated from 78 patients with no radiographic evidence of pathology. Two reference structures were used to classify temporal bone pneumatizatio...
متن کاملMiddle ear cholesteatoma extending into the petrous apex: evaluation by CT and MR imaging.
CT and MR imaging findings were reviewed in four cases of acquired cholesteatoma of the middle ear that extended medially into the petrous apex and middle cranial fossa. In one case the lesion further extended anteromedially into the sphenoid sinus. CT demonstrated the lesions as nonenhancing hypodense masses with bone destruction, extending medially from the middle ear cavity to the petrous ap...
متن کاملComputed tomography of temporal bone pneumatization: 1. Normal pattern and morphology.
The pneumatization of 141 "normal" temporal bones on computed tomography (CT) was evaluated in 100 patients (age range, 6-85 years). Because of the controversy surrounding the sclerotic squamomastoid (mastoid), temporal bones with this finding were discarded. A CT index of pneumatization was based on the pneumatized area and the number of cells seen within a representative scanning section. Res...
متن کاملTemporal Bone Pneumatization and Pulsatile Tinnitus Caused by Sigmoid Sinus Diverticulum and/or Dehiscence
BACKGROUND Although air cells within temporal bone may play an important role in the transmission of pulsatile tinnitus (PT) noise, it has not been studied systematically. PURPOSE To evaluate the difference in temporal bone pneumatization between PT patients with sigmoid sinus diverticulum and/or dehiscence (SSDD) and healthy people. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 199 unilateral persistent...
متن کامل[Pneumatization of the petrous apex].
Pneumatization of the petrous apex was investigated in 226 subjects without middle ear disease by means of target imaging CT. The degree of pneumatization of all subjects was 32.7% (148/452 ears), but no difference in degree was revealed with distinction of bilateral ears or between sexes. In 148 ears with pneumatization of the petrous apex, a higher degree of pneumatization was found in larger...
